The Bar Association of Baltimore City Presents Awards for Black History Month Essay Contest
 Award Recipients and Representatives from the BAR Association
At a school assembly on April 27, 2009, Mary Alice Smolarek, President-Elect of The Bar Association of Baltimore City presented awards to the winners of the Bar Association’s Black History Month Essay Contest. Students were asked to write on a variety of topics: Sixth graders wrote a Biography of an influential African American; Seventh Grade students addressed “How does Atticus from To Kill a Mockingbird use his law degree to fight racism?” and Eighth Grade students wrote a reflection on the Inauguration of Barack Obama. Mrs. Smolarek told the students the judges were “very entertained and informed by your essays, and were impressed by all of the hard work that went into them.” Three winners for each grade were announced, and the winners received a commendation plaque and gift cards. The winning essays will be featured on the Association’s website at www.baltimorebar.org. Contest winners were: Sixth Grade 3rd place – Brennan T. 2nd place – Solaimon T. 1st place – Nicholas F.
