State Senator Verna Jones Hosts Eighth Grade Students at State House On Wednesday, the eighth graders traveled to Annapolis with two representatives of the Association of Maryland Pilots. Students visited the State House, were introduced in the gallery of the Senate, and lunched with Senator Verna Jones, our host, who spoke to the students about public service and advocacy. The students were also met by Delegates Keith E. Haynes and Ruth Kirk of the 44th legislative district in Baltimore City, where Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy is located. Our young men should be proud of the time these very busy elected officials took to address them and to make them feel welcome in Annapolis. It is a testament to their promise, and to the reputation of the Academy, that three Maryland legislatures welcomed them with open arms. Delegate Haynes provided each student a folder with information on the state government and a House of Delegates pin. Many students have been seen wearing these pins on their shirts and ties this week.
Without the great dedication and generosity of the Association of Maryland Pilots, represented by Mr. Joseph Wyatt and Mr. Peter White, this excellent opportunity for our students could not have taken place. We are lucky to have formed such partnerships with businesses and associations in the Baltimore area to provide our students learning opportunities that stretch beyond the walls of the classroom. The Maryland Pilots and the Academy summer program are currently working together to design a summer school project for the seventh graders that will integrate science, history, math, and writing around the theme of the port of Baltimore. Stay tuned for more information! In the Senate gallery
