Delegate Keith E. Haynes Hosts Eighth Grade Students at State House On Thursday, February 28, the eighth grade traveled to Annapolis with two representatives of the Association of Maryland Pilots. Students visited the State House, were introduced in the House gallery, and lunched with Delegate Keith E. Haynes, our host. Delegate Haynes, who represents the 44th legislative district in Baltimore City where Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy is located, spoke to the students about public service, the legislative process and answered questions about his role in the General Assembly. Trooper 1st Class Stanley Slide from the Maryland State Police also participated in the event. Hailing from Baltimore, himself, he shared his unique perspective on how our students could reach their goals. Our young men should be proud of the time this very busy elected official took to address them and to make them feel welcome in Annapolis. It is a testament to their promise, and to the reputation of the Academy, that Delegate Haynes welcomed them with open arms. Without the great dedication and generosity of the Association of Maryland Pilots, represented by Mr. Joseph Wyatt and Mr. Peter White, this excellent opportunity for our students could not have taken place. In addition to arranging the State House visit, prior to the trip, Mr. Wyatt and Mr. White visited the Academy and primed the students on the legislative process - particularly, on how a bill becomes law. They provided each student a folder with information on the state government and a House of Delegates pin. Many students have been seen wearing these pins on their shirts and ties since Mr. Wyatt and White's lesson.
We are lucky to have formed such partnerships with businesses and associations in the Baltimore area to provide our students learning opportunities that stretch beyond the walls of the classroom. The Maryland Pilots and the Academy have also teamed to design a summer school project for the seventh graders that integrated science, history, math, and writing around the theme of the port of Baltimore.
