Varsity Basketball Team Wins 3rd Consecutive
Krieger Schechter Middle School Invitational

The St. Ignatius varsity basketball team enjoyed a fabulously successful season that culminated in their 3rd consecutive Krieger Schechter Middle School Basketball Invitational championship.  The Knights began the season in fine form, compiling a record of five wins and one loss.  However, in their final game leading up to the tournament the squad was beaten by Krieger Schechter in a 17-point blowout.  Rather than giving in, the loss refueled the Knights and they used a newly instituted full-court press to tally victories in the first two rounds of the tournament.  The championship game was a grudge-match against Krieger Schechter, and both teams battled relentlessly as the game entered the fourth quarter with the score tied.  The situation looked dire when leading rebounder Deontae Skipwith fouled out early in the period, but his teammates rallied behind the leadership of Trevon Harlee and Michael Ames to pull out the win.  The MVP award for the tournament was given to Skipwith for his hustle and inspirational leadership throughout the three games.

The season was a testament to the ability of the boys to come together as a team.  They learned that success as a team is built on trust and caring between teammates.  Eighth graders Darryl McCallum and Deontae Skipwith were integral in this transformation as they exhibited selflessness both on and off the court.  The 2008-09 Knights basketball season was truly one to be remembered.
