History
Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy is dedicated to serving Baltimore City boys and placing graduates in the best college preparatory high schools in the region. The Academy is an independent school, accredited by the Association of Independent Maryland Schools. It is governed by an independent, volunteer Board of Directors under the auspices of the Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus, commonly referred to as the Jesuits.
Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy was founded in 1993, under the leadership of its first President, Rev. William J. Watters, SJ. The Academy was modeled after the Nativity Mission Center School in New York City. With the support of business leaders, friends, and community members, Saint Ignatius Loyola Academy opened its doors on August 30, 1993.
The Academy is located in Baltimore's historic Mt. Vernon neighborhood on the original site of Loyola College which opened 1855 as both a high school and college. Loyola College, now Loyola University Maryland, is located in the northern part of the city, and the original high school became Loyola Blakefield, now located in Towson, MD.
